Head of Mexico’s powerful teachers’ union arrested
MEXICO CITY (AP) — The head of Mexico’s powerful teachers’ union was arrested at an airport near Mexico City Tuesday for alleged embezzlement, with federal officials accusing her of using union funds to pay for plastic surgery, to buy a house in San Diego and even to pay her bill at Neiman Marcus. Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said that Elba Esther Gordillo, who has led the 1.5 million-member National Union of Education Workers for 23 years, was detained in Toluca on charges that she embezzled 2 billion pesos (about $160 million) from union funds. ******************************

Belgian killed in Mexico had been threatened
MEXICO CITY (AP) — What had seemed to be another attack on a tourist in Acapulco appeared to turn into something a bit more involved but equally sinister on Monday, when the company of a Belgian businessman shot to death in the Pacific resort over the weekend said he had received death threats following a legal dispute with a former business associate. The killing of Belgian Jan Sarens outside a shopping center on Saturday cast a pall over this once-glittering but now violence-plagued resort, which is preparing to host the Mexican Open tennis tournament this week. It was the second violent attack involving foreigners in Acapulco in less than three weeks. On Feb. 4, a band of masked gunmen invaded a beachfront home and raped six visiting Spanish women. ******************************

Illegal immigration: What exactly does a ‘secure’ border look like?Once, the barren mesas and shrub-covered canyons that extend east of the Pacific Ocean held the most popular routes for illegal immigrants heading into the U.S. Dozens at a time sprinted to waiting cars or a trolley stop in San Diego, passing border agents who were too busy herding others to give pause.
Now, 20 years after that onslaught, crossing would mean scaling two fences (one topped with coiled razor wire), passing a phalanx of agents and eluding cameras positioned to capture every incursion.

Political, economic and social conditions in the United States make this a propitious time to create a Latino political party, asserts Armando Navarro, a political scientist at the University of California, Riverside.
Navarro will present a paper calling for the creation of a Mexicano/Latino political party at the 40th Anniversary Commemoration of the 1972 Raza Unida Party National Convention Aug. 30-Sept. 2 in El Paso, Texas. The paper, “Prospects for Reviving RUP or for Creating a New Partido,” will appear in Navarro’s newest book, “Strategic Scenarios for Mexicano Self Determination of Aztlán in the 21st Century: What Needs to be Done,” due to be published

McCain compares immigrants, speeders
During his at-times raucous town-hall-style meeting in Sun Lakes last week, U.S. Sen. John McCain compared immigrants now in the United States illegally to traffic speeders, saying they should be allowed to get straight with the law by paying a penalty and taking other steps.
“All of us, from time to time, I think with rare exception, unfortunately, have broken the law,” McCain, R-Ariz., on Tuesday told the crowd of more than 150 people in the retirement community near Chandler. “Mine was while driving an automobile at an excessive speed. I paid a fine. I paid a fine. I had to go to (traffic) school. Some of us might remember that experience.”

Bob Goodlatte, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, didn’t get the sexy assignment among Republican lawmakers in fixing the nation’simmigration laws. |
While Sen. Marco Rubio (R) of Florida and Rep. Raul Labrador (R) of Idaho are the public, Latino faces fighting the PR battle for an immigration fix,Representative Goodlatte is doing the spadework of making sure that, however the immigration reform debate breaks, House Republicans will be ready.
A 20-year House veteran from Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Goodlatte laid out his perspective on the coming immigration reform debate in a half-hour interview with the Monitor on Friday.

The ‘Gang of Eight’ and Immigration Reform: ‘Bordering on a National Security Nightmare’
We learned this morning that President Obama is impatient with Congress
so what does Obamnesty do……………………….
- “Thank you, black folks,”
- “The pilgrims were illegal aliens” and
- “The pilgrims never gave their passport to the Indians.”
‘Comprehensive’ and ‘Reform’ are Washington words that should send Chills up every American’s spine. Paraphrasing Will Rogers, it means that “the Congress is back from vacation and we definitely are not safe!!!”
It now appears that once these Bills are introduced, the Open Borders lobby will try to Ram them through Blitzkrieg-Style, to shut off rational consideration.

Grenade attack at U.S. Consulate in Mexico - National drug cartel …
Thursday, the Dallas News reported:
Three grenades exploded Thursday evening in Nuevo Laredo, just feet from the U.S. Consulate office, sources in the Mexican border city said.No injuries were reported, but the explosions rattled the neighborhood, as locals scurried for cover amid a firefight between what’s believed to be members of the Zetas criminal group and their former allies, the Gulf cartel, which is making a push to reclaim the territory. The two groups appear to be battling, leaving a trail of killings and burned houses. In recent days, sources said, seven people have been killed — three of them Americans — and five homes torched. The U.S. Consulate issued an alert, and Mexican soldiers were deployed to guard the building.
